If you have been washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner following your hair will be drier and the strands won't lay flat. The shampoo works like a soap or harsh detergent and strips your hair of natural oils that help to hold curls intact.
Instead get your hair wet and run your fingers through it rubbing any parts of your scalp that feel built up with product. Then coat with conditioner and leave in for 5 minutes while showering.
While your hair is still wet put in gel and scrunch through getting any parts that tend to frizz more. Leave in conditioner is also a good product to put in pre-gel.
The book Curly Girl is must have for anyone with wavy to really curly hair.
My daughter has curly hair and I always apply leave in conditioner on her hair so that it stays soft and moisturized, also make it a little moist with detangler every day when you comb it so that it doesn't get frizzy. Hope this helps.
